Clean a messy workbook: have Copilot flag issues, then decide yourself
Use Copilot as an auditor rather than an autopilot. Ask it to flag anything that needs manual review on its own sheet, then fix the data with Excel features you control.

Tools used
- Copilot in ExcelSuggests and explains formulas; flags issues
- Excel (Microsoft 365)Where the data and formulas live

A list of data problems with reasons, and a cleaned copy where every change was one you chose.
Anyone who inherited a messy workbook: impossible dates, totals that don't add up, inconsistent text.
Before you start
When a How-To Geek writer asked Copilot to clean up a messy spreadsheet, the edits were not the best part. The investigation was: it produced an issues worksheet explaining what needed human attention and why. r/excel users reach a similar conclusion, that AI works as "a helper, not a replacement" on messy real-world sheets. This guide follows that audit-first approach.
Step-by-step instructions
Work on a copy of the file
Save a copy before you let Copilot edit anything (File → Save a Copy). Copilot in Excel opens in edit mode by default and can change your workbook directly. Use plan mode if you want to see its approach first, or chat mode for analysis without edits.
Where this comes from: Get started with Copilot in Excel (Microsoft Support).

Why this works
Edit mode changes cells. A copy keeps the original as your source of truth.
Ask Copilot to identify anything that needs manual review
Ask for an audit rather than a fix. In the How-To Geek test, asking it to "identify anything that needs manual review" produced a whole "Issues - Manual Review" worksheet, grouped by category, with reasons: "Month 13 does not exist", totals compared with quantity times unit price, and ambiguous dates listed with possible interpretations.
Where this comes from: How-To Geek in I thought Copilot would clean up my messy Excel spreadsheet (How-To Geek).
Check this sheet for data problems. Don't change the data. Create a new sheet listing anything that needs manual review, grouped by type, with the cell address and the reason.
Why this works
An explained list lets you judge each problem; silent fixes don't.
Decide each fix yourself
Go through the issues sheet and decide each one. One r/excel user notes that real sheets carry "business context that lives in someone's head", which is exactly where AI struggles. Ambiguous dates and mismatched totals often need that context.

Why this works
Only you know whether 03/04 is March or April in this file.
Apply fixes in small, checkable pieces
Fix one category at a time: one column of dates, one set of totals. Give Copilot a focused range and an explicit rule rather than the whole sheet. The same user found AI works better when given a cleaned range or a defined rule set than when "the whole chaotic sheet" is handed over. Re-check totals after each batch.

In Orders[Date], convert text dates in DD/MM/YYYY format to real dates. Don't touch any other column. List any value you couldn't convert.
Why this works
Small batches make it obvious which change caused a problem.

Pro tips2
- Keep the issues sheet as an audit trail after cleaning.
- If the same cleanup repeats every month, move it into Power Query or a script so it runs the same way every time.
Common mistakes2
- Asking Copilot to "clean everything" in one go on the original file.
- Accepting a guessed interpretation of ambiguous dates.
